Recognizing orchids

Hi there. I would like to know which orchids are those two and when to repot them? When I tried to recognize them by myself from the interned what I have discovered - could the 1st one be a hybrid between Vuylstekeara Cambria and Burrageara? Some Odontoglossum hybrid? Because of the shape, size and color of flowers. When I bought it was just said 'Cambria'.



Could the 2nd orchid (pic below) be something like Odontobrassia? The same question - when and how to repot and which potting material?

You did pretty good...

The first is possibly Vuylstekeara (or Oncidiopsis) Cambria, or one of the many similar hybrids. There really is no way to be sure. They are all variable and far too many to choose from. Cambria is used as a trade name for the whole group.

The second is most likely a Brassia, not an intergeneric hybrid like Odontobrassia. Again, a precise identification is unlikely unless we can be certain it is a species not a hybrid.

When you buy orchids without a complete and accurate name it is almost never possible to come up with a precise identification, but that is a close enough identification in either case here to point you to the proper instructions for care. It is best to repot these, or almost any commonly grown orchids, when there is new root growth just starting. A matter of watching and observing rather than a specific season or month. The exception would be if the media has broken down and is causing root rot, then the right time was several months ago, but right now is the best you can do.

theflowerbread, did you ever tried googling "Cambria"? Sometimes when you do that, you'll get back many hits with items that have a prefix to that word, like "Odontoglossum Cambria", etc. The hits you get back from your Google search will usually contain some links that have images which will help you identify your orchids. You can also do a Google search for that word under images ONLY (The hits you'll get back will only be pictures and no words/you can flip through the pages of pictures and hopefully get an ID that way.). My GUESS is the lower picture is a Brassia hybrid & the top is a Miltoniopsis of some sort.

As PaphMadMan said, when you have so little to go on for identification, it's nearly impossible to get a precise ID. However, if you went with the assumption that it's a Brassia (hypothetically), you could care for it in the same manner as those would be, monitoring it closely to see how it's doing. If it doesn't thrive, then you go back to the drawing board (what is this OR what component in my care for this item appears to be leading to its failure to thrive)

Thanks guys for the answers!. So after googling couple of times more my conclusion I came out is: the 1st for me looked something from miltonidium bartley schwarz 'highland' family and colour range. I never considered miltoniopsis as the flowers were in a size between oncidium and miltoniopsis (as milton. usually have quite big flowers, ok except mine this year ) and is what miltonidium looked like to me. Also mine has longer leaves and bigger "bulbs" (ok it's not a bulb but the stuff leaves are coming from, I don't remember how is called) is bigger than milt. I have seen has. The 2nd I will call a Leopard Brassia until I'll find something better Anyways thanks again and I will check back later the care and dormancy info!
