I learned about S/H culture here myself. Google "Semi Hydroponic" and you'll find tons of good information. There is a section of the forums dedicated to it too.

OK I am looking into this S/H....venturing from one orchid to water to 65 with different needs has been challenging and fun....learning as I go....hoping not to kill any....want some awesome blooms.....yes I am hooked....
If you love to over water that should work great for you. Not all orchids are suited for it and your personal circumstances will determine which ones do well for you and which ones don't. Just research pretty thoroughly before you start so that you avoid some of the possible mistakes. Plants that are not growing new roots are not good candidates to move, as roots actually adjust to their growing conditions as they grow and don't do well when you change the growing conditions, so you need new roots growing into the new media that will adjust as they grow. That's one biggie - I've lost a couple of small orchids by moving them at the wrong time, others of the same species have thrived because they were at a different stage of growth.
For me, the larger Catts and Onc have thrived and the little ones I've had trouble with S/H. I think that was the root thing, I didn't really pay enough attention to it. I haven't tried Phals, my two Paphs love it.
Have fun!
Thank you for that advice Ray.
