    They say that it only takes 18 years for an avacado to produce fruit from a seed grown plant. I have one growing in the back yard that is about 5 years old only 13 to go, WHEE!!! In the mean time they are 3 for $1 at the produce stand.

    ummm... you need at least two avocado trees... a male and a female, so better get those other ones going

    ok I did more learning and apparently in cooler areas it is possible to get plants to grow and fruit with one plant.

    See, the flowers on these will open as a female flower in the morning and then closes and the next day open in the afternoon as a male... vice versa... so, in warm areas it is synchronised so that you need two trees...

    But, in cooler regions, the plant gets mixed up and just flowers male and female all over itself so it is possible to get fruits...

    so there you go... start planting if you're in... umm... New York I guess...

    i wont plant in NY. Well maybe in a pot to get it started. It would have gone in my parents back yard. Or front.

    Well, both pineapple and avocado would have a hard time surviving NY winter... but both could be grown indoors as ornamental plants... If you want to try an avocado, I can start one for you but it will take a couple of months to get to the stage where I could ship it.
