Phrag. Mountain Maid
My Mountain Maid is just about open so I took a couple of pictures this morning. I had a devil of a time, the lighting was crummy and I was trying to avoid getting any trees in the background. I took 15 pics. Here are a couple that came out allright.

One more that might be a little brighter. I'd tried to be artsy w/ the sun, but all those came out over exposed.

Thanks for posting! I can definitely see bess and hirtzii in the bloom! How big is the bloom? I bet it's very cute! It's very dark and cloudy up here also.

It is maybe 2" across? I can measure it from home later but no bigger I don't think. Very cute. The pouch is little! I like the freckles and I always love how sparkly and crystalline the new blooms look. I couldn't capture that well in the photos. You are right, I think it shows up better in the second, but I really wanted something w/ out all that background house mess! Oh well...getting picky.

that is exceptionally yellow! (unless my eyes are playing tricks). There are a handful of phrag crosses that allow besseae fma. flavum to really come through--I think Mountain Maid must be one of them.

It is the flavum variety, yes, Jason. However to my eyes it looks quite limey almost chartreuse, more than yellow.

It's still exceptional because 97% of hybrids made with besseae flavum turn out, if I may be blunt, to be smaller and paler examples of the hybrid made with red besseae. Very few turn out pure yellow or almost pure yellow with minimal red. BTW, try keeping the buds shadier to bring out the best yellow in a plant. I'm not sure if it works with phrags, but it's a well-known trick with standard catts to keep the yellow and green ones shaded while in bud and to give the red catts very bright light. I think that holds true for phals too, on a different light scale of course.

Hm, that's very interesting! I'll have to check out my mom's which is also just blooming. From the same vendor, same variety. Wonder if it as yellow?

Nice work on the pic, too. If you look closely, you can make out a few sparklies on the bloom--don't know if that was the "crystalline" you were talking about or what, but at least some of it's there!

Yes that is what I mean. Tomorrow is supposed to be bright and sunny so I am going to try again...so, you'll all be subjected again come Monday morning! lol.
