Encyclia cordigera v rosea x alata

first blooming. raised from a small slightly larger than seedling sized plant. i have had this for three years, outdoors in a protected spot (with a bit too much sun) on my balcony in los angeles, southern california. i'm getting ready to move to northern ca, so i'm glad this flowered before i moved. it smells delicious. the first flower has been open three days, and the scent is light, but very sweet, sort of powdery. so far you have to put your nose right up to it. but it is very sweet scented.

It is that time...I have a couple Encyclia in bloom out back. Your Cordigera has a nice color to it. Great job

the flowers have the size of the cordigera, but not quite the substance. smaller lip than my cordigera has, but with the markings of the alata lip i think it is very colorful. it got the rosea colors, but with alata markings i think. i love the fared 'attacking spider stance' of the petals and sepals. i think i got really lucky on this one! i have been looking up photos of this one, it doesn't seem very common, but the parents are both well known, so i think that is strange. there is quite a bit of variety in their mix. most seem to carry more alata traits and colors. i'm really happy with this one. most enyclias have sort of small flowers, but these are nice sized. they should cross everything with cordigera.
