Basal keiki

M my boyfriend has this phalaenopsis orchid, and he brought it to my house. It has a basal keiki and I told him eventually it should be separated, but he doesn't seem to believe me.

It isn't ready, yet, it's still pretty small.

The bigger question I have: is it safe to repot the orchid with a new basal keiki? I'm afraid of hurting it.

i am not an expert here, but i had tried both method. leave it on or remove it....as long as the plants is healthy, no issue.
i can see it is in a plastic pot, should be easily removed for repotting.

I've never seen any reason to remove a basal keiki unless it was ready to detach itself anyway. What do people have against big multi-crown plants with lots of spikes?

As for repotting, if it needs to be repotted then delaying possibly for years until the keiki is bigger would put the whole plant at risk. Better to just get on with it, being as careful as you can.

I would leave it as it is, I agree with Kirk, what's wrong with more then one orchid in a pot as long as the pot is big enough for the whole plant which from your picture is ok for another year.

You should leave the basal keiki attached until the keiki has its own roots, at which time it will separate from the mother plant on its own.

This process can take years, in contrast to a flower stem keiki, which could be ready to pot on its own within one year.
