Encyclia boothiana
The plant has been driving me mad, trying to get good pics. One problem is that the flowers are individuallyonly about ½ inch across ; so there is the usual depth of field problem. Then there is something odd about the colouring ( infra-red reflectivity perhaps ?) the "real plant" has good mid-green leaves and bulbs. But to get the flowers looking anywhere near right, the leaves show up as black....
I have been trying to use stackshot for the complete plant, to solve the d-o-f problem but it is such a long learning curve, and I keep coming up against silly eqipment problems ( like I need to see what the camera sees, and with a complex gear set-up I can't get my eye to the viewfinder, so I decided to go tethered... a week later I am making that work, but find I need a 1.5 m firewire cable, or I am forever tripping over wires trying to get the set-up done.. The n I find that I am trying to use the same (PC) port to control the trigger and for the tether... and so it goes. I'll get there in the end, but not in time for these flowers this year.
Whatever ; the orchid comes from Mexico I think. We don't get Mexican species , here in Europe, apart from ones which have been in cultivation so long that plants can be found here for selfing or sub-crossing and then seed-raising. And that doesn't get done for obscure things like this. So, although on my wish list at least since the last century, last year was the first time I ever saw it listed, and able to add it to my collection.
Has grown well for me - long may that continue . Then maybe I will do better pics next year.... maybe... and then, maybe pigs can fly...
