It is wrapped in cour - coconut fibre. I have kept plants in this stuff for several years. For ones that want to hang down it is best to leave them - e.g. Dendrobium unicum is often sold like this. If the hook is positioned so that the plant is at the top, then unwrapping and potting conventionally is a possibilty , and I have done that with no trouble.The tiny blue flowered plant - Ceratocentrum merrillianum is usually sold like that, and I kept mine in the coir for three years, and it double spiked every year. After potting more conventionally it took 2 years to recover, and then had a single spike. Taught me a lesson- what is it you guys say - if it ain't broke... ?
