    Default Phal mounted on driftwood

    Hi,

I'm very new to the forum as well as growing orchid. I had some driftwood laying around for my aquarium but saw some orchid mounted on driftwood and decided to take a stab at it. Yesterday on Valentine Day, I took some phal I had at home, cleaned it up, and mounted to the driftwood with some moss and cotton threads. Without much research, today I've actually done some research on it and saw couple of places on the net saying phals can be hard to be mounted in home. Can you guys give me some advice as to maintaining it and also any tips on keeping it alive and thriving? I live in Atlanta, GA just to give you guys an idea of where I am geographically.

    I've also added some pics.

    Thanks in advance.

Looks very nice. There is lot of space for more Phals.

Looks great but be careful with wood you've already used in an aquarium. Don't do it at all if it was a salt water tank. Even with a fresh water tank I'd be very watchfull. Wood absorbs a lot of chemicals in an aquarium. Salts from fish waste, particularly urine, are absorbed and held. Ammonia is extremely toxic to plants. I know because I killed more than a few this way. It does looks great though! Your Phal should sart to get new roots soone. If they die when they touch it take it off that mount. I they are growing but not sticking to the wood post another picture for us to look at.

Good job on the mounting of this Phal! If you are concerned with the drift wood, which could cause a problem, you can soak it is water for about 24 hours that will help pull out any salts that might be in that piece of wood, you might want to change the water half way thru. The best way to keep that mounted Phal is with the leaves pointed downward, similar to the third picture, then you don't give it a chance for water to get into the crown of the plant.

    Hi,
    It looks very good.
I think the trick is to keep the plant well hydrated, you can see from the leaves if the plant receives enough water.
I find that to be able to soak the mount and roots is practical especially in hot weather.
    Ciao Nicola

You will be busy watering...but it looks great! Frequent soakings are going to be your best bet I imagine. Outdoors in summer, you could use a patio mister set on a timer to help you out.
