Well, it's actually my dad's birthday too, so I might not mention we've renamed it "Jason Day..."

thank you all! only worked 10 hours today (which isn't that bad). no paphs involved but I did treat myself to a $380 conventional fishing reel! (it may not catch me more fish than my 100 dollar reel but it is silky smooth and a pleasure to use).

There are living things in those rivers??? In the NYC area??? (Besides the toxic chemical induced mutant monsters?)

I usually make the trek out to Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn to hop on a party boat, that takes you out into the ocean somewhere. offers you a lot more variety and usually a much better shot at catching fish. I have started fishing the East River this year, and have caught some striped bass that use the river as a conduit between the ocean and the LI Sound. A significant population of striped bass actually travel up the Hudson to spawn, and every year some very large fish (pushing 30-50 pounds or so) can be caught in the Hudson and East Rivers. Most of the other indigenous saltwater species are also found here, including blackfish, sea bass, fluke, flounder, porgy, etc etc. Much cleaner than it used to be. If I ever catch a keeper striper or fluke in the East River I would not be averse to eating it, since they spend most of their time elsewhere and pass through the river to feed. (I did however throw back an american eel from the east river despite it being one of my sushi favorites, since these suckers live there year round).

Happy birthday, Jason! Hope you have a reel good time. For $380 you ought to be bringing in tuna and swordfish!
And a happy one to your dad, too, Julie!!!
