bchd95- to Arne's idea, you might want to try masdevallia's and dracula's in a terrarium with a glass cover. That way you can better control temp and humidity.
Have several friends in New England that do this quite successfully.

@Arne yes I do believe there are standards in which the orchids need to be kept happy. But the way in which we provide doesnt have to all be the same. How funny I actually went ahead and purchased a humidifier too last weekend. I do have 2 cattleyas a c. Walkeriana coerulea and c. Ports of Paradise. Its still gloomy here with the seasons transitioning. I’ve actually never heard of broughtonia before. I have an east facing window and deck above my backyard. The vandas get hung/ summer outside and I spray them down with the hose.

@Keysguy that would be a great idea. I’ve never thought about that. What a great display it would be.

The plant is dehydrated, I suggest you hang it on an amphora, possibly of terra cotta, cover the bottom with about ten centimeters of expanded clay and put some water so that it covers it slightly, making sure that the roots do not touch the 'water.
A lot of light and a good air change, do not fertilize until you show signs of recovery.
Alternatively a greenhouse with 70% - 80% of "UR" (FOG plant)

The vanda has been topped. The roots weren’t pushing through. Base foliage covered in fungal spots and new growth progressively getting smaller. I took everyone’s advice into consideration however I just couldn’t look at the orchid like that anymore. It was depressing. So it got the big chop. I’ve researched what to do when topping vanda types. Stem has been cut 3” below the desired length. Damaged leaves cut. Stem dusted in root hormone and potted/ hung in sphagnum. It’ll be atleast 2 months before any visible signs of new root growth appear. I’ll keep everyone posted.

Normally, if the lower leaves get infected I'll just cut the leaves off and spray fungicide. It take guts to chop a big Vanda like that. I really, really, really hate doing that because I have gone through it before. You will need to keep the surrounding humidity higher since there are no rooting system left or else it will be more dehydrated easily. Two months is very optimistic, but let's keep things positive.

    fingers crossed for you bchd.
I never had the nerve to do that until new stem roots above where I wanted to cut were at least a couple inches long.

    Brandon.

There is a vendor in Hamilton ON that sells KelpMax. An overnight soak - complete immersion - in a solution of 1 tablespoon/gallon will be far more effective than rooting hormone powder on the wound. Email me for contact info.
