    Default Identification Help

I found this beauty at my grocery store this morning and couldn’t resist. Unfortunately, as is typical, there was very little in the way of identification, just a tag that said “Oncidiums & Intergenerics” with some general care instructions.

Anyone have a clue what she actually is?

I don't grow this type of orchid but the colour is amazing. Maybe someone will be able to help.

Isn't it?? I am a sucker for a deep red or maroon (as you can see by the color of my house, haha).

The official name is Colmanara Masai Red, aka Oncidium Masai Red.
The parentage is unknown- remarkably, since the normal Rules to register a name dictate that the parents are specified. However, this is one of a number of orchids which are CITES exempt, if imported/exported in flower.
This exemption was negotiated by Taiwan, at a time when they were exporting this kind f orchid , in flower, by the million, with the idea that Customs officers who cannot be expected to know an orchid from any other plant , can simply compare the picture in the CITES exemption order, and then wave the consignment through.
So the Registrar of Orchid Names ( the RHS) had its arm twisted to allow the registration without meeting the usual requirements.

Btw Masai red and it's near sibling, Masai Splash , grow well in S/H for me - I have some plants in early spike now.

Once in a blue moon, ours has something other than a gazillion pink or white phalaenopsis (no offense to phals ... I've certainly bought enough of them). I pounced right on this one. $20!
