I've been doing a lot of plant science reading lately, but I'm still way far away from breeding orchids. My question, though, is whether there is a decent database which lists breeding compatibility charts, chromosome numbers, etc. Or is that not really published anywhere?

Sometimes, you will find treatments of certain orchidaceous genera with the genetics information on the internet...

If you let me know what orchidaceous genera or Subtribe you are looking for genetics information on, I may be able to help you... are you looking for information pertaining more to hybridizing and compatability, or for taxonomical pruposes?

There is not much of a database for breeding compatabilities. If you are going to start researching Orchid genetics, you need to pick a Genus. I would suggest Phalaenopsis, but that will depend on your growing conditions. There is much more information available on the Ploidy of Phalaenopsis than most other Genus. Simply in Phals, you want to avoid Aneuploidy at all costs, that will eventually become a dead end of breeding. Most offspring will be sterile. You need to make sure you breed Tetraploid with Tetraploid and Diploid with Diploid. Breeding Triploid with a Tetraploid will result in Aneuploidy most of the time.

I'm years and years out on this one. I'm really still learning orchid culture and "husbandry." I'm just curious, due to a lot of reading on plant propagation and organic chem lately. haha Might have to pick up a genetics text soon, too. Thanks all.
