Well here is the other one. It is called: Zootrophion atropurpureum
It is truly weird. I did a little research to see if the blooms open up more, and they do not. There is a tiny slit in each side. The polinator, in this case a fly, will go into one slit on one side and come out the other transfering pollen. We have two of these for some reason and they grow like weeds. If they didn't looks so bad, I would list it on Orchidbids and see if I could trade it for a different bulbo. They are just covered with burn spots from the sun. Anyway, without further ado:

This is right up Aaron Tester's alley! Little weird guys! He wouldn't even care for sunburn. We all have it!

It does look like a kidney bean, Bruce! Pretty color but weird flower. Thanks for the shot! It's great to see all the stuff we don't each grow, as well as what we do. Orchids are simply amazing in their variety.

Zootrophion flowers remind me of the head of a bird, or perhaps a dinosaur. They rock! However, they are not a bulbo type. They are actually part of the Pleurothallid Alliance.

Oh, you're welcome. I'm quite the Pleuro fiend. Although, having said so, I only have one Zootrophion (dayanum). It's not too happy--I suspect it may be too warm and/or too bright and/or not humid enough for it and I'm going to move it to my (slightly) cooler growing area. Your plant looks great to me, and gives me something to aspire to!

P.S. If I'd been on this Bulbo. thread a week ago I wouldn't have had any bulbos in my possession. However, just this past weekend I bought one at my OS meeting (it's Cirrhopetalum lepidum). Another group of orchids to get all excited about. Yikers, soon I'll be running out of space again!

Yes, Zootrophion is in fact a member of Subtribe Pleurothallidiinae. Closely related genera to Zootrophion include Cryptophoranthus (which included some of the now segregated Zootrphion) and Ophidion (a segregate genus of Cryptophoranthus, proposed by Luer in 1982).

LOL... at the rate the taxonomists are going, you'll have more tags than bulbs on those pots!!!

The genus Mastigion was segregated from Bulbophyllum by Garay, Hamer, and Siegerist in 1994. Very nice plants BD!
