Butterfly orchid

This hybrid Psychopsis Mendenhall 'Hildo' FCC/AOS has been in bloom forever! As far as I can remember, the four spikes have been in and out of bloom for over 2 years and still blooming! The blooms are quite large and resemble large butterflies on tall skinny spikes.

I also have the parent species Psychopsis papilio which has also been in bloom with 3 spikes for more than a year but flowers are slightly smaller than the hybrid.

i love, love, love these plants. my psychopsis mendenhall 'monarch' has a wire growing, and the bud is going to open up anyday now.

im developing a obsession with these butterfly flowers. my next acquisition will be an alba psychopsis papilio.

Thanks! Those "wires" do get quite tall and skinny and wirey and will stay in bloom for many years.

Supposedly, this species started the orchid craze in Europe more than a century ago.

Thanks! This plant is huge and should be divided. If you're interested, I can sell you a division or trade for a your bess hybrid div. This particular hybrid was recently awarded FCC/AOS! I really like it because the flowers are HUGE bug like and forever in bloom.

that is a possibility. The bes belongs to my wife. It is her only orchid, so getting her to part with a div may be a task. but we can definately talk about it when you get ready to divide it.

OK, that sounds fine! Do you know the name of that hybrid or is it a NOID? The Psychopsis Mendenhall needs to be divided 'cause it is getting quite large and taking up slipper space. At one point, I had thought of getting rid of it but this clone just won an FCC/AOS recently, so it's a keeper for now.

Mine are not mounted (not suitable to where I live) and they are doing perfectly fine in pots.
