10 Gallon Aquarium

I have a 29 gal tank I have converted to a terrarium. I made a hood that holds 4 CF lights, I bought a CPU fan, power converter and a dimming switch to raise and lower speed for fan and installed that in the aquarium. I built walls out of a mix of peat and concrete bonder that is available at any hardware store. I have a flae bottom that stores water and a fish pump hooked up to mini hoses that pump the water up and make it weep down the peat walls. I also made fake roots and branches out of mortar, peat and concrete bonder and painted them with waterproof patio paint.

Pheww!

I have several tropical plants given to me as well as ferns, bulbos, Phals, Several types of jewel orchids, Flickegeneria, Philodota and a few other Pleuro in the tank and about 80% of them have bloomed for me.

I plan on making a very large one this winter. if you have any questions on construction or plants, feel free to email me.

Hi Ed,
To get as many respomses as possible, scroll to the top of the page, and click on Orchid Culture. Then there will be a 2" bar that says "New Thread". Use that to type in you question. LJA or Louis own the forum and also is the CEO of River Vally orchidworks. I'm sure he would be glad to help you in your paph / phrag situation. He is VERY patient, kind, and has REALLY healthy plants.

persistence: how much maintenence is the whole setup? do just add more water every once in a while?

the whole thing sounds like fun - especially that peat wall!

The only maintenence is adding water which it goes through pretty quick. This was my first one and the next would have a larger reservoir for the water. The peat walls evaporate water quickly. Occasionally I nip off a tropical plant that is getting to big but that is about it.

That is so awesome, I'm feeling a terrarium itch starting. I'll have to talk to Jim (the guy I work for at the orchid farm) and have him point me out to the ones he has that would do well. He has alot of true mini's that I think would do good. Have you entered a show with that?

LOL Show? it's just a wee lil thing and only about 7 months old. It was my trial terrarium before I build the large one. Fan parts were under $25. peat was cheap. Concrete binder was a lil more spendy at $20 for a gal which will last a long time. Light fixture was another HD mix and match. I had leftover bamboo flooring for the hood.

You want to see some guys that really get into the Vivarium thing. This sight is awesome.

Does anyone grow any orchids in a fish tank? I just opened a box from my ex(long story made short) and it is my fish tank. I'd like to put it to use, but have never known anyone grow in a tank before. Any suggestions?
