Fran, I know a lady from Ottawa grow a lot of masds in her basement with shop light. She said it worked very well since her basement is cool and humid in the summer.

The leaf loss can be due to orchid show displaying stress rather than heat. I have 3 ice packs to keep the bottom cool. The stupid lights warm up the vivarium.

I might be barking up the wrong tree, as I have NO experience whatsoever with vivariums, but in fishkeeping terms there are set ups for aquariums that feature raised lights that are specifically designed not to heat up the water. i don't know if it would translate to vivariums - as I assume that to maintain humidity levels you would need to have some sort of cover over the tank and under the lights. I am not sure if having something like a glass or plastic lid/ layer between the tank and the lights would also have the greenhouse effect, but maybe with the right types of lights?.

It's probably something you have already considered, but just in case....

I have two 15 W 18'' flourescent fixures that were made for reptile tanks and I have raised them my sticking things on the bottom. If I could have one fixture with two tubes that would be better. The transformer inside the fixture also gives off heat.

I unpotted the plants and there were lots of healthy roots and the sphag was still in good condition so I didn't mess with them. Nice tangle of fine white roots The infracta doesn't have good roots at all (in fine bark mix), but I'm not going to complain to the vendor because I want to stay likeable. But I'll grow those roots back in sphag!

I'll set up a cool orchid setup in basement storage room in the summer. The room can drop to 10oC or a little lower in the winter which will be ideal and I doubt it will get hotter than 25oC in the summer. It'll be a great place to put future dends, and paph armeniacum and micranthum for winter rest. The lighting should give day/night temp fluctuations too. I'm getting excited, there are so many orchids that need cool temps or seasonal temp fluctuations

I think armeniacum and micranthum are the only ones are more fussy. The cool drop helps initiate bud and gives them a growth rest. Slightly drier in the resting period. I've heard some armeniacum expiring after a number of years in culture when growing in constant warm temps. I've also heard of people giving no rest at all in places like new york, with artificial lighting and large wire baskets that are huge clumps that are almost always in bloom (they have naturally sent out many divisions), with sphag moss and just having fans blow on them all the time. I think the rest of the parvis should be fine with household temps, which do cool down in the winter (unless your thermostat is set very high). At least I don't hear about people giving them extreme cool rest. Just a watering slightly less often.
