What is a good first time paph?

Don't worry I was too happy when I got my first paph bloom...

I couldn't tell it was wrinkly at first. The blooms look more chamberlainianum influenced and was the pod parent so you are right, it's sequential. I think it took on some of both characterists, it is partially multiforal so there's more than one bloom at once, but they don't go all at the same time. I really like this one

Thanks Fren for telling me more about the make up of the Helvetia. I actually chopped off the old bloom - the sepal at the back behind the pouchy bit (you can tell I am really trying to learn new terminology here) was covered with tiny aphid-y things. There didn't seem to be any on the other bloom, so off with it's head it went, rather than have them spread. Hope the poor thing doesn't mind.

Hopefully they will like where they are sitting. It's bright, but the sun shine shouldn't hit them directly.

and yes that is an old casserole dish being used as a plant pot - long story but basically tomato fertiliser really damages enamel!

But that one in the clear plastic dish looks like it's sitting in water. Paphs don't want to do that. They'll be too wet. Phrags like that. If you want water under the pot for better humidity, you have to have stones or pebbles in the bottom of the dish, and the plant sits on those. Just keep the water level below the bottom of the pot. Otherwise the potting media will continually wick the water up, and the roots will rot.

My mother would certainly be surprised at me actaully being obedient! Don't worry, the plant pot is actually sitting on an upturned plastic flower pot saucer, so is raised above the water line. I ran out of decorative pebbles (must go shopping.. again) so I had to improvise!

I don't know!!! (wailing and tearing out my hair) I am still learning, and need to spend more time looking up details. I admit I just fell in love with the colour of the Paph (Macabre x Grand Master) x charlesworthii, it is so rich and deep. Even though the bloom was damaged at the show before I bought it, I had to have it.
