Doesn't sand compact and make it difficult for delicate roots? Not sure where I got that from, although I suspect itcould be more to do with fish tanks than house plants...
This is a weird terrestrial orchid, Kerry. It's native to Florida, but grows in sandy soil. The roots are very bizzare. They look like tubers - sort of like elongated potatoes.
