Paphiopedilum philippinense var. roebelenii

Many may recall the story behind this plant
This variety is limited to Rizal, on the island of Luzon, The Philippines. This specific plant has been producing two distinct lateral sepals instead of a typical synsepal... very unusual in Paphiopedilum.

very nice! it's funny, but I have had two phils that sporadically produced the split synsepal on a single flower (with normal flowers usually).

Did that occur at every flowering, or just on any flower any time?
I really like the divided synsepal... in person, it is much more attractive than the typical form

That is beautiful, Pat. We have a Paph. Lebaudyanum that is doing this same thing with its synsepal. I have never noticed it do this before. What causes this?

I too prefer the split synsepal... and the species philippinense seems to have a propensity to do this... like it's harking back to its primordial beginnings... lol...

it seemed to be rather sporadic, not every flowering, and only a single flower was affected at any given time. I only brought it up because it seemed like a coincidence that this species did this!

I love the interesting looking white and maroon striped hood. That one is a looker!
