I am not really sure if there are certain ways to tell from just looking at the plant (other than the obvious- leaves falling off in winter and coming back in the following season). I suggest you PM Murray from New Zealand. (Orchid-man). He seems to know quite a bit about dendrobiums and their cultivation/care.
