Vanilla. What do you think?

I have chance to buy Vanilla planifolia. For a long time I have been seeking for her and finally I found it. BUT! Plant with 3 leaves costs around 20 euro including PP. I've read that it is not really spectacular, and that It can grow very big, which is problem at my place. But yet...It is Vanilla... Oh... What do you think? Shoud I buy her? Is the price too high?

for me the price is too high (maybe because it is in euros...) and I am unsure of how well they grow and bloom indoors. Even their cuttings root very well though. You may find someone why is willing to give a cutting. This plant is also difficult to find in Canada (I think I have seen it for $20 canadian), but seems that there are many for sale in USA. I'd rather get a cattleya since their blooms are similar

Yes, I also think that the price is too high. I don't think to grow it indoors, maybe in the greenhouse. Well, I don't think that I will find someone who have the Vanilla here, but, if I ever find some plant...I know what to do...

Yes, for that money, I can buy some other, more beautiful orchid!

Also if it bloomed and is pollinated it is a long long process to get actual vanilla , I have a friend in India that sent a link to me, after reading it I will stick to the store vanilla . In my humble opinion not worth it . Gin

I killed my vanilla a while ago, it was a tiny seedling that grew well then suddenly decided to commit suicide. After reading a lot of articles, I decided not to replace it since it requires lots of space and special conditions.
It's like growing a vine tree in your house...it will never carry fruit, however easy they are to grow outside in Greece's climate. Same thing with vanilla, it may become adapted to the growing conditions in your greenhouse, but it may never flower.

We used to keep vanilla vines at the greenhouses at college, and they were GIGANTIC... the cuttings we took of it grew well, but we knew it would be years before they bloomed. I don't have it anymore, of course ;-) I would recommend against it; and suggest something that could be a bit easier and more rewarding, like a catt, as was mentioned previously.
