Very cool piece of wood!
I like John's idea.
Steve - how is your cattleya doing on this piece of wood? That's a very piece of wood - is it free-standing?
Cypruss grows best in the swamps. Trust me on that one. Do not worry about the water. The occational watering will actually help the cypruss. To keep the fresh color, and keep from cracking. My house is 80 years old, and counting my boys, 5 generations of my wife's family has lived in that house. My kitchen cabinets are cypruss, and I just put a poly seal on them. This causes them to be as yellow as fresh cut pine. I would not seal it if I were you. Don't worry about the weather, my grandmother's picnic table was out in the yard, it is still like the day it was built. 1943.
The wood is not cypress, it is probably Douglas Fir as it is pretty soft and came from the mountains of Oregon.
I have a stick mounted B. nodosa and would have thought I'd have lost it by now in MT and now dryer CO..but it's actually quite happy (has a bit of sphag around the roots). I give it a good soak once a week and then water once or twice a week (twice here in CO) and it's shooting out new growth and dare I saw looks like it might bloom soon? I don't have a clue what my relative humidity is in my house, but I can guarantee it's DRY....for whatever this is worth!
I have a mounted Catt that we keep in our house (also has a bit of sphag around base)---I haven't been using any humidifiers over the summer and the AC has been running constantly. I run water over it every other day and spray with fert occasionally. It is in sheath now and full of new roots, so it is possible to grow them despite the decreased humidity indoors.
THANK YOU for the responses and encouragement.![]()
