Bone Dry

I was told to let this guy dry out properly before watering but today I found out that the roots are almost crispy. They are really bone dry and might break with the slightest touch. Is this too dry or do the Catts really thrive like this even though it might mean some broken roots?

Also, check out my two new babies on this one. Bought July 2007 with 7 p-bulbs and one of them in bloom. Since then it as put on 3 new p-bulbs that are nearly mature now and it looks like it's putting out again. It's probably not getting enough light to bloom right now but I must be doing something right.

I would suggest that if the roots are that dry , you should give it a good soaking and then start the drying out process again. You don't want the roots to become crispy. New shoots are always a good sign.

Yes, give it a good soak. Drying out is meant for the medium, not the roots. The bark that the roots are potted in is what should dry out. This should usually not take too long in an orchid that is potted correctly. In mixture that is broken down too much, it will stay wetter - longer. The plant looks really healthy.

The plant looks really healthy to me and the roots look fine. I grow on the dry side especially in the winter. Your new leads are beautiful and are progressing nicely.

Even though the roots are dry they WILL NOT break with just a touch. I have aerial roots that are like that that are remarkably resilient.

Keep up the watering. However, instead of running water through the pot next time..maybe you try a ten minute soak in a bucket or something. Good job!
