Wow, it's good looking flasks. What kind of medium you are using? They are semi-solid medium? How could the seeds come under the medium? May try to test semi-solid medium to see it's better or not? Cheerssssss. Nguyen

Well, actually, since the insides of the flasks are mostly sterile, there shouldn't be any bad smell since there aren't any bacteria to promote decomposition, and I have never decteded a bad smell when deflasking...but I also do like to collect the orchids that smell like pond-water when they bloom (Pleurothallis cardiothallis) so, maybe my definition of bad smell vs. everyone elses differs a bit.

The medium I have been using with the most sucess is labeled simply P699, if you look up orchid medias and type in P699 or P698 you should come across the vendor. It is a semi solid, and you can vary the "hardness" by adding slightly more water than you would if you mixed ip up according to the directions. Some orchids when they start developing roots, actually prefer to have a softer medium for the roots to embed in than others (pleuros from what I understand prefer softer medium). We haven't seen any root development yet in the larger seedlings, at this point they're still absorbing the nutrients through whatever method they use before they develope roots (does anyone know the biology behind this?).

I've always lost some seeds between the glass wall of the medium and the medium itself. I try to limit the amount of water that ends up in the flask from the soak and washing of the seed, but there's always some. I wonder if there is some way of eliminating this, since it is the residual liquid that drags the seed down with it. But, it isn't too big of a loss sine there is still alot of viable "green" on the surface of the medium.
