All summer when I water the orchids, I startle green anoles, who come rushing out. So far I don't think we've brought any in.
We had a large one this summer who somehow got trapped between a door and the screen door. When we saw him and let him loose, he looked dehydrated. My son thought he'd just pick him up and put him near the spigot...but the anole wasn't having any of that. He opened his jaws verrry wide, and held them like that a minute, then suddenly clamped down on the part of your hand between the thumb and first finger. Son dropped lizard, who ran off in a huff. Luckily a bite that might have been fatal to a moth left my son unscarred.

Nothing is worse than accidentlu breaking a spike before the flower has opened. You wait and wait and then crack--its gone GRRR...
so true bill......when that happens to your first ever masdevallia flower spike, it really crushes your moral.
having the roots coming out of my pot and in the top 1/2" of the pot in the winter location shrivel and die while the roots towards the bottom look like they are dying of rot!
....never give in, never give in, never ever give in.

ouch! thats gotta hurt...the orchid i mean.....
also, when you mean to pot on an orchid, then you see its got meally bug, then you forget why you took it from the pot and start to untanngle its roots and then have to try toput it all back into a pot. its not so irksome, but very annoying, yes.
Mabuhay!
what really irks me when it comes to my orchids :
1) not enough budget to buy that beautiful orchid
2) envious of other people's trees with big trunks and many "ideal" branches for orchids/ferns/broms.
3) mother nature's fast changing moods. Imagine i just finished watering the whole garden when all suddenly dark clouds formed and started to rain.
4) a father whose past life was an "illegal logger" or just someone who just loves lawns
5) poisonous/venomous critters
more next time.....
hmmm....no 1, just visit a loan shark then buy out an entire nursery,
no 2, take to the trees with a chainsaw in the dead of night,
no 3, well, i dont know how to solve that one,
no 4, well, that one either
no 5, just plant jaw traps around your orchids and check them every night and morning. that should keep them out!
all theoretical of course, and i would probably do some of these things too, being a teenager, except the loan shark thingy.....thats just stupid for anyone to do lol
