This has got to be the hardiest orchid ever. It survived extreme dehydration and neglect and was still the first orchid to ever be bloomed by man at the Kew Botanic Gardens...

So, here is another one that has graced us with it's first flowering...the fragrance is just wonderful and we are very proud of it, he has survived a big move this year and suffered extreme heat in transit and dehydration that almost killed it. I brought him back from the brink and is now healthy and flowering.

He he he... I know what you mean! I have that same problem at times as well. The trick with these is that unfortunately most orchid books and websites mention that these are cool growing. I found that they do better when grown intermediate to warm. Also, they need a slight drying in winter when water is sparsely applied. Mine is grown in a pot and is in a greenhouse year round, the leaves seem to get holes if low humidity is experienced and flowers stick or blast in those dry conditions. They are more and more rare in nature so i recommend you get another one and give it a go just for that reason.

And just to confuse the issue....

My humidity has been about 20% or lower most of the winter & I had no problem with the leaves at all. I find in my conditions, they need quite a bit of water -- otherwise I get the crinkled leaves. Haven't changed my water regimen at all.

Have to wait on bud development evaluation. Bloomed okay for me last year though the kinked spike resulted in it blooming just above the pbs.

I've seen a couple places still offering them. I lucked out, though and got mine as part of a trade.

Mine doesn't really get a cool period -- definitely intermediate to warm.

Well I agree with these comments and yes, these are tough little orchids. As for others not having problems with leaves and flowers, that is great as I would not wish that to anyone. Goes to show, different conditions for different growers worldwide.

Thanks....I will move my new one (dumb me, bought one that is not in fantastic shape on the sale table at a greenhouse) to the warmer growers room here. I'm seeing some new growth-wonder if it's too late here to do a winter drying as the days are getting longer?

Hopefully this one will do better. I probably need to bite the bullet and just buy a big, healthy blooming plant and try that.

They (encyclia cochleata) are easy to grow & flower, but do best mounted. They also like high humidity, so I keep them in the greenhouse where they get misted twice a day. Betty

It's easy to grow these (encyclia cocheata) If you give them the culture that they need. I grow mine in a "warm" greenhouse with all the orchids being misted twice a day.
I fertilize weekly, (weakly) three times a month,then use plain water once a month to flush out salts. Guess the cocheata's like it here, as they are healthy & blooming most of the time! Betty :-)
