firstly, nicely done on the flower, it is no mean feat to get from spike to blooms, so getting it this far is a job well done! and beautifully fotographed with the background... very arty...

talking of... cool avatar... i'm almost sure they are roots, but the idea that it could also be some wormlike creature is wickedly disturbing...

actually, he was unwillingly put in charge of cleaning out the attic of a failing compounding pharmacy that his pharmacy moved into...they were all "trash". he found some things of historical value, if i am not mistaken. (tuskeegee experiments maybe? not sure) most of the things that are framed are from the 1920-30's.

Not to hijack the thread, but this is really cool. I noticed the background too and thought it was a cool table cloth or something. Really interesting and great research. Thanks for the story.

PS: The phal baldan's kaleidoscope is a beauty. And just because the spike was starting does not mean you do not deserve credit for the bloom. Good job and a beauty of a first bloom. Congrats!

And on another note, thanks for bringing up the Tuskegee experiments, which I had never heard of and looked up online. (it is an absolutely appalling story!)
