Thanks everyone your great so far the others are doing good but these two dends still dont look happy I sprayed them this morning to moisten the medium but I think they are still getting too much light and not enough air flow but I am puzzled about the air flow as I was told to keep the lids shut to keep the humidity high until they were a bit older then slowly let more room air to get in to acclimatise them but I am sure that lack of air flow is half the problem, I dabbed the leaves of the dends after id sprayed so no water was left sitting on the leaves but they have not perked up at all and I have lsot 3 or 4 leaves. The den antenattum is one i particually want as well I so dont want them to die but am at a loss as to whats the best thing to do I can take the lids off and put them on the shelves with the fan but then humidity will drop leave lids on to keep humidity up there is no air flow! oh my I am too new to orchids to have bought these LOL
Yep, these definitely need more air circulation. Deflasked orchids also need light intensity increased slowly; you cannot just take them out of the flask and put them into very bright light because there is a good chance that they will turn yellow. Good luck with them! Get a small computer fan, try a auction website, they sell them for cheap![]()
Thanks Becky they have been moved to where the fans are ( they are comp fans) and i have put the lids half on and half off to try let air in but keep humidity up hopefully they will perk up, the light is less intense there as well as it just a flourescent strip light the others look quite happy but they were more shaded than those two boxes plus the plants looked stronger to start with. I will take a pic of the one that is labelled as phal lobbii and get some opinions as it sure doesnt look like a phal to me It looks suspiciously like a tolumnia. Any thoughts on whether these are phal lobbi or not much apreciated as they are the oddest looking phals I have seen!
Hi Carrie,
I can understand why you might think these are Tolumnias, but they're not quite the right shape. Instead of a fan, the leaves are growing up along both sides of a central stalk, in an alternating manner. This is typical of Phalaenopsis & other monopodal orchids. I've never grown Phal lobbii, but they do have sharply pointed leaves in some of the illustrations I've seen, so I believe these at least *may* be correctly identified.
Cheers,
Rob
Ah thats great Rob thank you, I had tried looking at some photos of them and the only ones where I could see any of the plant looked like regular shaped phals hence the confusion, I guess time will tell as they mature, good to know though they are maybe looking like they should do.
Have you tried the Community potting before you separate them? When taking them out of the flask it's best to let them mingle in the tangled mess to let them grow apart rather than try and separate them?
Looks like they may be getting to much light?
best of luck!
Michael
Thank you michael, yes I think they were getting too much light so I have moved them to another area with flourescents rather than the HID lamp and they are getting better air circulation as there is a fan there they were seperated pretty much when I recieved them as I didnt deflask but one variety wouldnt seperate they were a tangled mess so I thought I was in trouble I now know I can pot them as they are and they will sort them selves out, thank you so much that is really great info! there seems to be a little new green growth on them now so I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will pull through! without everyones help here I am sure I would sent them to a premature grave!
