Hi Gilda,

Are you a lily pro? I helped a friend divide some last spring and we potted them and set them in her goldfish pond (they thrived the summer before). The divided ones did nothing...nada...zippo. Any thoughts?

Gilda, the lotus and lily arrived today--they look great! Looks like both have already sprouted new leaves, and I placed them in a bucket of water in the greenhouse. How long can they stay that way before being planted? Also, how far into the mud should they be buried? Should the lotus' tuber be completely covered?

You need to put them at least in a ft. of water OUTSIDE in your pond. You don't want them growing now in your greenhouse now....they will get huge , , be difficult to pot in the spring, and it might affect the blooming.!

You can put them in the pond where the water is at least a foot deep and just place a rock on them to keep them from floating back to the top and freezing. In the spring you can retrieve them and pot them up. Just be careful and not break the growing tip on the lotus....it is very FRAGILE ,and if broke ,it will not grow a new one.

Did they go back in the same pond ? Plenty of sunshine and plenty of fish poo is needed for good blooms.....not enough fish poo ,then fertilizer sticks for potted plants will do ,too.

The frog house is actually a toad house, it came from a discount store called "Big Lots".

Yes, they were in the same pond (it's a small one). It gets good afternoon light and 6-8 goldfish were doing their thing (I'm assuming - I never really watched.)

I think my friends are going to scrap the non-performers and just buy new ones this year.

I'll definitely look into the toad house - it would be a wonderful addition. Did the frog actually go in there?
