margo- maybe you can translate the name for me! it is ctna. (maui maid 'december bride' x maui maid 'lea') x bro. negrilensis. i think that means it's some type of cattleya! it wasn't very expensive and i get a little more experience deflasking. i thought i would get to replate them, but it seems i had poor planning! if they hadn't gotten so jumbled in shipping i would have left them in the flask a little longer, but some of them really are big enough to compot. (what do i know)
thanks for the links last night. i see someone was using peat to compote some babies. i was glad to see that as i did the same with some tiny enc. but it was really a mistake (i thought i was buying spag.-oops) they're about 2-3 weeks out of the flask and seem to be doing fine.
i've just potted up set 2 and used spag. this time. i have so many i'm just going to try every compot medium and see what they like best!

You have a cross: cattleytonia x broughtonia. Ctna Maui Maid =C Hawaiian Variable X Bro sanguinea.
I am using sphag for my flasks and just mist them every morning- they seem to like it...

august 1- well, here's what i ended up doing. i followed margo's advice and went with the spag. one pot has some store-bought orchid mix that i don't like-it's just too fine for any of my older orchids (at least that's what i think) so i do use it for compots. the big container has peat/perlite. everything was soaked before i planted, and from here on i'll just mist them in the mornings. i'll let you folks know if they are still alive in a month!
