to me, it doesnt look much like a tillandsia at all. Usually, they have narrow strap-like leaves with the silver sheen mentioned above, and each plant doesnt exactly grow very big. Also, the mother plant will form a rather dense centre, usually reflowering within 10 years.
Are you sure it isnt one of the Aechmea? perhaps Aechmea fasciata?
it has a rather funnel shaped top like yours and dies back after spawning pups. It also has the wider silver leaves such as yours connie.
Flower bracts are spikey, brilliant pink in colour with lavender blue flowers.
then again, yea....maybe it is a tillandsia....that pup looks "curly" like one anyways......
