So, the cool wet air is the first to hit the milt and the other wet/cool lovers, and at the further end of the gh from the cooling unit, it gets warmer and less wet, correct?

RS, yep, you got it. There's a general airflow from cooler on one end to warmer at the other, little "microclimates" in between because of the inside fans notwithstanding. And yes, the pads are made of thick paper actually. They've been sprayed with some kind of solidifying agent to keep them from turning to mush when they get wet.
