If I can get my Vandas etc in flower at a time the right Phally pollen is available I'm going to have a crack at crossing them. Might be that never ending quest to get a result though !!!

BEautiful Yew!
Please do, Roy. I would dearly love to see a good blue Vandaenopsis with a big spray in the manner of the large pink and white phals - not the meagre displays of the violaceas and amboinensis. Not that there is anything wrong with the latter two!! I have related somewhere in my posts the story of a Malaysian breeder ( a long time ago) who advertised his cross of V Rothchildiana x Phal Doris and promised blue progenies. When they flowered, including mine, they were all poor quality white phals. The breeder/vendor disappeared from the local orchid scene and was never heard of again! Whether it was a scam or an honest(?) mistake will never be known. He did have the best V Rothchildiana, which had won many awards and even featured in magazines.
You can cross a vanda and a phal????
It is indeed a remarkable hybrid - I'm still talking about Pakchong Blue - not the vandanopsis later discussed ( I have several Pakchoings, , all different)- this one is a top quality tesselated blue.
It has been tried, and whilst there are some intergeneric crosses in the group containing these genera, there are so very few where Phal is one of the parents ; I think they simply don't grow very well ; have for example Rnthps Mildred Jamieson - which is Renanthera monachica x Phal stuartiana - it sulks for years at a time, then grows a leaf and produces a spike, which as often as not aborts - and this is one of the best !
STUNNER !the blooms are so voluptuous !
These are incredible! I don't think I have the room for vandas, but seeing this makes me want them so much. I wonder if I could convert my guestroom into a vanda room....

Hmmmm. . . . I wonder what would happen if you could find an intermediate between the phals and vandas, something that breeds easily with both phals AND vandas. Are the blue vandas terete leaved? I wonder . . . .
