Because you want the medium ( bark ) to be wet when you put the orchid into it. This orchid, however may not make it, I'm sad to say. It has stayed wet, too high up, too long. Cut off ALL rotten or mushy parts, put sulphur on the cuts and after re-potting DO NOT WATER FOR seven to ten days. Good luck...Betty

My suggestion would be to get off as much of the mushy part of the plant as possible, cut it off with a sterile knife, then treat with cinnamon. Re pot in bark which has been presoaked (bark repels water at first so it helps it to become a bit more absorbant if you soak it first) and then cross your fingers =) good luck.
