3 cheers for you, Maura. I have a host of potted plants on the ground of my shade house, underneath the hanging orchid pots. Not only does this increase the humidity in the orchid house to the benefit of the vandas and cattelyas, it also enhances the aesthetic aspect of the shade house. After all, with few exceptions catts, vandas and dendrobes without their flowers aren't the prettiest of plants. On the ground beneath the paph bench I grow the pretty Episcia with their variegated laves and pink and red flowers, as ground cover to keep down the grass and weeds. Other plants in the orchid house are 4 varieties of leafy Begonias, Guzmania, different coloured anthuriums, various ferns including birdnest fern and a pot of mini caladium.
