Between the two, I personally prefer Alec Pridgeons text. I'm interested to hear which one the other forum members prefer...

I'd say both are worthwhile acquiring. They illustrate a greater number of species between them if you have both! The weakest thing about Pridgeon is it is a tad dated now--there have been some changes in taxonomy, for sure. Botanica is more up-to-date. I think I heard there was a planned update to the Pridgeon book, although possibly by another author, rather than Pridgeon, himself. Matt, do you know anything about any such plan?

I ask Matt, becasuse I know he's a bibliophile, but if anyone else has information on this, please do jump in.

Hi everyone!

Been very busy with work lately, but the other day I finally found time for the Taipei Flower Market again, so here's some new stuff on Page Three of the album.

As usual, there's also some mysterious, uncharted stuff, and I'm particularly puzzled about the identity of the following three plants:

1. That tall paph - what possible hybrid could it be? I know it's probably next to impossible to find out the exact name, but maybe a few pointers in the general direction?

2. That cream "paph" - is it possibly a phragmipedium?

3. And the biggest riddle of them all - the Fenglihua Orchid, which I named after the orchid shop where I bought it and where I was told this was NO orchid, but something else, but they were not sure what.

So, enjoy the flowers and the puzzles :-)

Hi Two Ton! Here are my guesses on two of your beauties:

Tall Paph - could be a philipinese cross - Steve or LJA - what do you think?


Cream paph - I think definitely a paph of one of the parvi family..

As for the last one - but someone will id it. Maybe nelson?

Tall paph looks like P .chamberlainianum or 1 of the closely related species or hybrids , definately looks like a sequential bloomer.
Are the leaves slightly mottled ?

Right well, let me see...

Page 5. The green one can be any one of the maudiae typse, eg Paph Alma gavaert or Luna Moth (this would be a hard one to get the exact name as there are quite a few maudiae types around); The long petals might be the cross Paph sanderianum x supardii; the Paph/phrag is definitely a Paphiopedilum and might be Paphiopedilum Armeni White

By the way, beautiful Trichoglotis you have there...

Speaking of tips, following the advice of the Elder Forum Sages here, I 've now received Pridgeon's Encyclopedia of Orchids as well as Botanica's Orchids. Amazing books, to say the least!!! Thanks again!

Next up: the Riddle of the Fenglihua Orchid has been solved by a kind gent from Sweden (where would we be without the Intenet?): it's a robiquetia cerina.

Hmmmmmm.Post up a picie of the flower fully out , this may give a better idea.There are so many hybrids that it,s almost impossible to give a definate answer to it,s parentage.
