What Orchid can I grow in a south facing window?

If not, there are catts and dens that would likely do well with those light levels if in close proximity to the windows. Depending on your home's winter humidity, I believe you will likely still require weekly watering. Some of the more heat loving orchids may not grow much or bloom for you over the winter but there are many intermediate to warm growers that I would expect to do well for you. What will your home's winter night temps be?

you could also try oncidium/intergenerics... like Miltassia Shelob "Tolkein" for instance. mine can take bright light/some dappled sun in a south window. working on its 4th and 5th spike this year right now. although here in dry as heck california, i do water once to twice a week. but you might also try one in semi-hydro?

It’s a new development so the window is unobstructed. My winter night temperature is set to 68F. I would like to get a few plants, so will have to consider the compact or miniatures catts. After reading more about other types of orchids, it is clear weekly watering is common for most. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks, I will look into the availability of this particular orchid. I am a bit afraid to venture into other type of potting medium though.

In any event, you will have some trial and error to go through. Since every person's growing environment can be somewhat different, you may find that with whatever media you use that you might not need to water as often over the winter. It is not uncommon for plant growth to slow down over the winter so don't be disappointed if that should be the case.
