At one time I had a bench which I devoted to Miltoniopsis, and I reckoned there were about 80 or 90 different names on the labels, but less than 10 different sorts ( colours, patterns) of flowers. Partly due to the fact that anyone can make a new cross and give it a distinctive name, without it having o be a new look of flowers. And partly I think because some nursery trade people invent names to write on labels for one reason or another.
The only time it actually matters is if you want to breed from a plant |( a pretty remote chance for most of us, with most of our plants ! ) or if you want to enter it for an award ( and maybe I can say the same for that - a rather remote chance ).
