My plant is about 14 inches high. I grow mine naturally and the blooms are pendant. I have seen pictures of this plant in competition and it is usually staked. This orchid will develop large heads of 12 to 15 blooms and is very impressive. The plants has a very upright growth pattern. I do not believe they get much taller than my plant.

Hi,

I purchased this same plant two years ago at their booth at the Atlanta Bot Gardens orchid event. Mine has the same "droopy" quality and everything. I was wondering if you could share any cuture tips? When I got mine, it had three shoots and was in it's first bloom. Since then it fairly consistenly put out new shoots, but only the last two have fattened up. The next to latest shoot sent out a short pale-green sheath probably a few months ago, but nothing has happened since. I have a few Phals that I grow in the same area and they are happy and blooming right now, so I am wondering if maybe it just needs more light? I would appreciate any advice that you can share! Thanks!

I purchased my plant from a breeder who regularly attends the Atlanta show, so am sure our plant come from the same source. Since everyone has different growing conditions I can only speak in general terms. As a rule Catts. require more light than Phals. to do their best. I grow mine if full dappled sun with a Southeastern exposure. I also provide constant air movement which allows the plants to better tolerate the sun. Without the constant air movement the plant would probably do best with bright filtered light. I grow this orchid in an open medium. Because this Catt. has reed like pseudobulbs I allow the medium to dry between waterings but I do not allow the medium to stay dry for any length of time. Like Phals, Catts. like to be fertilized. I use the old rule when Catts. are blooming or actively growing and water them "weakly weekly". I fertalize this orchid at least every other week year round. If you decide to move your plant to a brighter location you probably need to do so slowly so it can adjust. If the humidity in your growing location is low you might want to raise the humidity. Your plant will naturally have the "droopy" quality. For shows and judging these plants are sometimes staked to give them an upright appearance. When I got my first orchid someone told me "watch the orchid and it will tell you what it needs" The next morning I carefully looked at my orchid and it did not tell me a damn thing! Over time, watch your Catt. for strong root and shoot growth as signs that it is happy. By the way, the Atlant show is this weekend. GOOD GROWING.

Looking forward to a report on the Atlanta Orchid Show - I'll have to miss this one. I also had one of these clones from the same breeder, but I have a pretty strict rule that my catt-family orchids have to have a scent, so it's gone to a more appreciative grower.
