Some find the scent to be more of a vanilla aroma. But as with anything as subjective as smell, there can be quite some leeway.

Typically during active growth, lots of sun, lots of water, and fertilize heavily. During the cooler, drearier days of winter (for those who experience such), light as bright as you can manage, cut way back on the water and fertilize little if at all. Many folks find it beneficial to give it a watering with epsom salt solution in the fall. (Think the ratio for that, if I recall, was one tablespoon per gallon of water. And my apologies ... I don't remember the metric equivalents.)
