Congrats.....so huge plant how do you support them?

Zain, as Roy said, the pseudo-bulbs and the flower spikes on this species are self supporting even though they're very tall.

Zain, the canes on C. amethystoglossa are generally huge, like clubs. No problem standing up.

Jeff, I think I read this was ameth' x amethyst' 'H&R. We are seeing a similar cross, H&R X H&R Supreme flower. Very similar flowers in all respects & with few & many spots. I have one but no sign of sheath, blast !!!

Roy, you must have read my post on another web site. Yes, that is the cross and I'll have to admit I almost gave up on this orchid because it took several years and got very large before it ever bloomed. Another complaint I have is that it only has one lead and only produces one pseudo-bulb per season on the lead. I would like to see multiple leads develop.

Mine was doing the same thing Jeff. I back cut mine & its produced a lead so its now a 2 growth plant.

The plant with my finger in shot, pointing to new growth from back cut (unflowered seedling similar to Jeff's ) the other is a mericlone of C. amethystoglossa 'Jaguar' & my hand showing cane size.

Your's looks very healthy, Roy. I hope it blooms for you soon. I read that, in Brazil, where C. amethystoglossa comes from, it's not a popular plant to grow because they consider them difficult to bloom. I think it's probably more that it needs to get large before it blooms and growers just give up on it.

I've heard that its difficult to flower. The nursery where these originated has 100's of them, all about the same size & only half have sheaths, even some of the biggest ones. The size it can grow to is off putting to some also. 3 feet I'm told or better in some conditions. Like C. guttata etc.

back cutting is a good idea to increase the number of front growths but it also precludes plant form judging as it then is no longer a single plant...

I'd say to just continue to grow it to the best of your ability and hopefully it will branch at some point. Some species just are not prone to do this but even C. amethystoglossa will branch at some point given the culture it wants. All you can do is cross your fingers and hope. Good luck. I think you're doing very well with it!

I have never seen this species in bloom and I am very impressed by both the color and form- beautiful!
