    That's what most manufacturers recommend. I'd also avoid fertilizer. It corrodes the heck out of the batteries.

    Thanks for this thread. I have a vanda in a plastic basket that i'm dieing to get out of there. Do you think it would be ok to cut the plastic out? btw, I dunk mine in a bucket of water every morning and then keep it in a terrarium with a little fan attached. It seems to like that.

    I am OBVIOUSLY not an expert, but I would cut off the basket carefully, yes. I would want to be rid of a basket I didn't like.
