Diane, I have always heard that, watt for watt used, the amount of light produced by a flourescent is cheaper and cooler as well. Is that not true on the screw in types?

Yes, but most compact flourescents that are made for plant growth need a special socket, which the type of fixtures Katie got won't have. These incandescents are quick, inexpensive and easy for her to use. Once she sees how well they work, she can decide if she wants to go for more expensive bulbs and a socket converter.
I use all flourescent bulbs myself, but I have shelves and fixtures designed specifically for plant growing.
Thank you for all of the great advice. I"ll post when I get everything set up. And then......I'll go shopping!
