Yep, that sounds like a good idea. Not so much watering while in spike and maybe no fertilizer either. It sounds like your doing everything right, and then the bud wilts. Very discouraging, I feel your pain! I'll bet the next spike you get will bloom! Keep the faith. If mine spikes this year and blooms, I'll take a photo.

They usually are dry as a bone in the store, not at the grower , I water mine as usual , the plant needs water to support the spike / bud, they have no storage for water like a Catt.
I would also suspect to close to the lights , might be the spike is more fragile then the others , It is bowed over before the bud opens exposing that area to the lights . Just a guess .. Gin

I agree with Tim and Gin. The bud gets too close to the light and the heat is cooking it. Different ones will react differently to temps, light, water, etc. Next time, try to keep the light at a distance as the spike grows relative to the plant/ light without the spike. Maybe that will make it successful for you.

Actually, I had moved it out from the lights last weekend, but I think that the damage was already done. Maybe I can keep it under the lights until it starts to spike and then move it to a lower light area? Like the windowsill or such?
