David waters the vandas and mists the draculas when I am at work so that is a big help. I probably spend about 1 1/2 hours during the summer and maybe 30 min to an hour in the winter watering the indoor orchids.

About 8 hours a week doing the have to's and another two with the just because I want to's.

About 45 minutes to 1 hour in the morning, about 3 hours in the evening, on weekdays. Longer time to spend on weekends. Longer time on specifically those with previously infected by spider mites. But if I am too tired, it will be a day off and they didn't get watered at all!
I probably spend much more time than the 4-6 hours per week that I selected. When I cannot do more I find myself standing there just looking at the orchids and I feel completely at peace. I'm not actively meditating, I'm just spending time with my orchids.
One of my friends, who has been growing orchids almost as long as I have ( more than 50 years) gave a talk to a local orchid society a month or two ago, and made the observation - to grow good orchids, you have to put the time in . This is so very true, but I was quite struck by it, had never heard anyone actually articulate it before .
The difference between the minimum input, and spending sufficient time so that everything gets attended to when it really needs it, instead of putting it off "until I can find time" is tremendous.

It is very joyful moment for me to see the growing not only flower buds and flowers but also new shoots and roots. So, I am spending at least 1 hr a day for my orchids.
