This is a photo of Stanhopea wardii, a plant from our personal collection. The plant has been in bloom on and off for about a month now.
Stanhopeas bloom once a year, the flowers lasting only 3 days. The plant producing these spikes is about 14 years old and we're lucky that multiple growths keep the 3 day long show staggered and continuing for a relatively long time. We might divide this one when it's finished blooming and will post the divisions in "Plants for Sale / Wanted" on the forums.
Though not exactly appropriate for the orchid enthusiast expecting a long lasting display for their table, these Stanhopea flowers are an excellent example of one of the reasons we became involved in the orchid hobby way back when.
In my opinion, this is insect mimicry at its finest.
