I agree, if this is a Myrmecophila tibicinas I would just pot it in a wood basket, although I wouldn't even use any sphag, depending on how often you water... My Myrmecophila brysiana is in an empty wooden basket hanging off the awning on our back porch, gets a lot of sun, and just absolutely loves it. (Though it may change it's tune when I'm forced to bring it inside for the winter...)
Having had a look at the photos and replies here is my input,
1)Hollow p/bubs,- no Dendrobium have them
2)Growth pattern,- the pattern is too spread out for a Dendrobium speciousum though some hybrids could grow like this.
3)The size and shape of the foliage,- Dendrobium spieciousum and it’s hybrids have very hard leathery foliage of a different shape to what you have there.
4)Still on the foliage,- the leaves are not broad enough for a Dendrob
5)thickness of the old spike ,- I have three spiesiousm in spike at the moment and the thickest of these is measuring just on 15mm.
My conclusion is that it is not a Dendrob but most likely a Schomburgkia
Clint my schombs all have hollow canes and the root growth is the same as your's. I have most of mine in baskets and they seem to be happy. I have 2 just tied on palms and they have attached and are growing like weeds.

The only schomb I have is one Abro sent to me last year. It is still in a two inch pot, so hard to compare. lol!
