hi randy. that farm is incredible. i am definitely visiting that farm!

i have a few question though. i wanted to start a vanda collection and mount them that way. what are the pros and cons with that setup? how do they attach their vandas on the wood? do they put some kind of support especially when it grows tall?

    thank you very much

personally i'd prefer my vandas to be hang barerooted, i love seeing those roots going
crazy.... anyways as for mounting them you can definitely do that, i have 1 driftwood and
i have about 6vandas mounted on it, and exposed to full sun, i have used nylon cords
and gi wires or whatever i have in my disposal. Drawbacks would be that you
have to water them a lot, at least 1x a day, i do it 2x a day.... vandas are really thirsty.
Plus would be that the roots can absorb more nutrients from the mount as the roots grows and
attached itself firmly. As for support, one of my Vandas are about 2-3feet taller than the
mount and no spport, i was really worried that it might break during typhoon ondoy and pepeng,
but fortunately it held on, so i'd say they are pretty robust.

As for the Vanda farm, they mounted the Vandas on the wood by bending a few nails so that it'll
hug the stem of the plant, no support whatsoever.

You can also have them potted, I have one Vandopsis lissochiloides that is potted, and you
dont have to water them as much as having them bareroot. One thing i learned about Vandas is how
much sun to give them depending on the leaves, for instance if you give a strap leaf vanda too
much sun it'll burn and if you dont give enough sun to a semi-terete leaf it'll not flower as
often. And they love to have high humidity, thats why i asked the wife to hose the garage every
    noontime just to increase humidity.

Good luck with your Vanda collecting.

    thanks for the info randy.

i already got 5 - 1meter long madre de cacao driftwood. i am planning to mount about 5 vandas per driftwood. i will be planting the vanda cuttings readily available and common here. i already asked the farm and they do sell them for 25 pesos per cutting. start with this and see if it does well, then do with the more expensive vandas.

i am going to place them in a location where they get full sun every morning to about 3pm, just about under a tall narra tree. as for the watering system, i am planning to install rows of tubing with small holes above the vandas connected to a water supply as to resemble rainfall.

will this set-up be ok? thanks a lot
