Default Repotted my Phal - whats this?!

hi guys - I got around to re-potting my phal before the weekend, and was happy with the results, thinking it had all gone quite nicely. To my horror this morning I had a little looky and found fluffy growths on the roots I could see through the pot.

What is this, do I need to worry and how do I get shot of it? Argh

Tried taking a photo but couldn't get it on here, so perhaps I need some practice at that. I'm hoping my issue is a stupidly obvious one for all you pro's out there!

    Thanks for any help,

    Darren

Hi Darren, what have you potted your plant in? I assume it is potted in a transparent pot. The white fluffy thing is definitely a fungus. It is common when you switch to semi hydroponics and you have some old bark mix sticking to the roots. Just water your orchid with a fungicide like Physan. It should be enough to solve your problem.

Good Morning Darren, sounds like it could be a bit of fungus or mold, but guessing blindly, would really like to see a picture. Also, have you re-potted in a new pot or a pot you are reusing? I always sterilise my pots before use, a dash of bleach (thick or thin) in a bit of warm water then a good rinse prior to the plant going in - even if it's a new pot.
I don't know if you use tobacco, but if you do make sure you wash your hands good before doing any orchid work. Tobacco can carry a bacteria which is fatal to orchids if not caught in time. I am just mentioning these things as I don't know what your experience level is, but hope you find it helpful.
("get shot of it" - bye the eck lad, as thy been up north, lol!)

ok, thanks for that - I thought 'fungal' too! such a shame, as I was so cautious when I re-potted, I even did the whole H.P. soak thing... what a farce that turned out to be

I live a way away from gardening centres or anywhere I'd be able to get my hands on certain products. Would I be able to use the peroxide I have to flush the pot or similar? Any ideas would be awsome. Would a re-pot (with a pot clean) be necessary too?

Best to post a photo of the problem and then we can give you a better idea for a solution. Without a photo it anyone's guess what it may be.

Some phals put out fuzzy hairs along the roots. A photo would give a better idea of what is invaiding the pot.

You don't need any harsh chemicals, just keep a fan near the plant- snow mold will grow where the air is stagnant. Don't mess too much with the plant if you just repotted, it needs to recooperate- a fan on it like a small 6" desk fan should do the trick.

do perhaps some holes need putting into the side of the pot do you think? this would help with the air circulation I'm guessing?
